Scoliosis: The Misrepresented 'Disease'

PARENTS FEAR IT

DOCTORS BRACE IT

SURGEONS SCAFFOLD IT

But what is the deal with scoliosis? How come it happens mostly to young females? Why do some cases seem more dire than others?

Whether or not we have answers to these questions now or later, doesn’t change the fact that it is addressable WITHOUT surgery, drugs, and braces. One of the remaining problems is:

Most doctors never consider muscles as the solution within the body Itself.

“I wouldn’t be scared if my daughter showed symptoms of scoliosis.” The doctor’s reply: “I would be!”

Picture a hospital scene. A youthful loved one is going through pre-surgery for a meniscus tear on his knee. The surgeon is well respected and has successfully completed this procedure in the past on the same patient a few years before. Are you nervous for the loved one? Going under the knife involves many permanent results (good and bad). Surgery is also an option that people choose more quickly now than in the past, due to technological advances.

If you’re like me, you’re not nervous for the patient. You’re instead filled with questions for the doctor. Questions involving alternatives to the procedures about to take place. This particular surgeon placated me with his time, and while he was honest from his perspective, I felt he was fairly close-minded with regards to postural exercises and how they change joint position. The topic shifted from knees to scoliosis and the doctor’s demeanor changed from optimism to fearful hopelessness. I remember telling him:

“I wouldn’t be scared if my daughter showed symptoms of scoliosis.”

The doctor’s reply: “I would be!”

Maybe your son or daughter displays this symptom. How do you feel about it? What options were you given to correct it? What was the forecast like when being offered the conventional approach? Did you ask questions? Were you made aware that other effective non-surgical approaches are successful?

If you look at some of the before and after photos on this page, I’m sure you’ll consider that exercise can have a huge impact. So why are we still bracing, barring, and otherwise afraid of this postural misalignment? Well if you’re a professional that is stuck in the belief that it is a disease, you’re never going to look beyond drugs, or surgery to find answers. It is only when you ask WHY the body would compensate in this fashion, that you end up with some solutions.

3 reasons why scoliosis is apparent in postures

Understand first, that anything the body is doing, is in response to its environment. Be it, emotional, chemical, vibrational, physical etc. In this blog I’m strictly going to cover posture, which means musculoskeletal causes and reactions. Even when posture is affected by another possible cause, postural therapy can make an impact. Remember as you read that MUSCLES MOVE BONES.

Hip Imbalance: One reason the spine will offset.

Think about it. Whether you’re a young girl having a growth spurt, or an middle aged truck driver sitting on his wallet, if your pelvis and/or hip is thrown off, what will it do to the adjoining bones that connect directly to it? Go ahead and try it. Sit down in your chair and elevate (lift) one of your hips toward your ribs. What do you feel? Where do you feel it? A one sided reaction up the spine into your shoulders shifting you in a zig zag pattern right?

Now ask yourself, is this correctable. Remember MUSCLES MOVE BONES.

Spinal Rotation: One reason the spine will offset.

We are designed to rotate, but what happens when our body won’t go back to neutral when we are done demanding rotation for jobs, a sport, or during exercise?

Thats right, the body becomes off balance. A chain reaction occurs through the entire body.

You try it out. Stand up, twist your body like a cork screw and hold it there. It doesn’t have to be a dramatic twist, but notice what changed. Are you weighted more in one leg than the other? Is one shoulder affected? Keep the twist and try to walk with it. Imagine if this is what your body memorized as ‘normal’ day in and day out. What would happen over the years? Getting the picture? You’re off balance.

Shoulder Imbalance: One reason the spine will offset.

I think you’re starting to get this. If there is a difference between your right and left sides ANYWHERE in the body, it will trigger a response in the entire unit. Demonstrations that you can feel are so much fun aren’t they? Try this out. Drop one of your shoulders down and forward. What do you feel? Where do you feel it? Did you notice the chain reaction of muscle response and joint position?

If one shoulder is doing something different than the other,

You can expect the body to perform its miracle, Adaptation.

Thank goodness for it, because if we didn’t adapt, we wouldn’t be able to move at all. So hurray for adaptation! The body is smarter than we are. It knows exactly what to do, and is doing it at every possible moment.

Here is an example of a celebrity who has a shoulder imbalance which caused a scoliotic curve. Bethany Hamilton works with a postural therapist using Egoscue, and other methods to keep her as aligned as she can be.

The best part is she uploaded a GREAT routine that you can do to realign your body. Remember: MUSCLES MOVE BONES.

Scoliosis is NOT a death sentence

There are many people taking control of their life experiences by researching what they CAN do for themselves. One of my clients displaying scoliosis was told by one of his doctors that he expected his curve to get worse year by year. Even with the surgery, the determination was that it would degenerate over time regardless of what he did. The doctor was WRONG! Check out my video right after our postural alignment session.

Even though there can be multiple reasons (viral, neurological, mechanical, emotional) why the body would demonstrate a scoliotic curve, getting the muscles out of compensation and restoring balance will benefit you greatly!
